Gun control is a topic on everyone’s minds, especially those of us that live in the United States. We tend to have a lot of shootings, but that violence isn’t exclusive to the United States. Typically when there’s a shooting and it’s covered by the media, there’s a lot of outcry for Gun Control laws, or at least the rhetoric behind which, to be discussed in Washington. While we’re still sorting that out domestically, let’s take a look over the next several weeks just how Gun Control and Gun Laws look in other countries.

Gun Laws in Canada

Guns are highly regulated, though not completely restricted in Canada. While exhibiting (albeit different) signs of the Frontier, “Justices of the Peace” would penalize citizens carrying handguns without in the days of pre-‘Canadian’ Confederation. After this period, minor amendments would be made whenever applicable to Canadian law, however in the 1970s, much like domestically, the nation began to impose a series of restrictions on different types of weapons. Canada made it a requirement for all gun-purchases to mandate a criminal background check in 1977, and from 1995 forward, all firearms were required to be registered, including non-restricted firearms. The government has since rescinded the extension to non-restricted items.

Canada only has the following items labeled as Prohibited:

  • Replica Firearms
  • Suppressors
  • Handgun Barrels that are under 105mm
  • Electrical/Mechanical Devices that alter the triggering mechanism
  • Any ‘Bull-Pup’ Design Firearms

Aside from these prohibited items, many of the firearm restrictions are on par with ours domestically. Quite significant, though, is the rate of violent crime that has been impacted due to the actions of the government in 1977. From 1977 to 2003, homicide related to firearms dropped from 1.15 to 0.5 per 100k people, though homicide by other mechanism has declined a lot less slowly.
